BUYING HINTS and WHAT TO CHECK

Some china exporters are still using Australia as a dumping ground for sub standard bamboo flooring.

These boards are usually offered for sale cheaply on the internet, ebay and discount outlets.

It's the usual case of buyer beware, what sounds cheap is usually sub standard.

The cost of good quality Chinese bamboo flooring varies very little. There is minimal cost variation when manufacturers purchase the poles from the farmers, pay for production labour and transport to port.

Like all industries there are some “fly by nighters” who see a “quick quid” to be made by undercutting established prices with poorer quality product and little knowledge of what they are selling and then disappear. 

Recently we visited China to find out why a large quantity of the strand woven flooring being sold cheaply both here and in America was failing. It turned out that things are really tough in the bamboo flooring industry up there with manufacturers only making 1 to 1.5 USD a M2 profit. 

Strand woven is produced from shredded strips of bamboo that are dipped into a huge pot of glue, drained, loaded into a mould where it is pressed into a billet which is eventually milled into individual boards. Glue is a most expensive (and vital) component in the process, unfortunately there are manufacturers who cut corners to “save” money by reducing the glue content, the result is an inferior quality board that looks good until installed resulting in swelling in damp weather or shrinkage during a dry spell (or completely disintegrate). 

Our manufacturer still produces to our specification, minimising the risk of failure.
